Young Church meets every Sunday at 11.00, starting in the service, then various activities take place dependent on age, in other parts of the church.
GREEN GIANTS
Green Giants is our Young Church project for 2011.
We are doing stuff connected with:

JAN-APRIL
The Ragamuffins came up with the name 'Green Giants' for our project. The folk
who look after the church garden very kindly let us have the flower bed between
the gates on the Nicol Street side to look after. With help from Grace the
Ragamuffins planted vegetable seeds in an unused part of the church garden.
In a children's address the Ministers told the rest of the congregation about
the theme for our project.
We had a sleepover in the church in March. Sona organised a recycling game. The
children split into 2 teams (boys v girls). Each team had to race to sort a
massive pile of cans, cardboard and plastic bottles and to put them into the
right recycling bin at the other end of the hall. This was a fun way to think
about why recycling is important.
UPDATE 31 MAY 2011
The project is going well. If you have any handy tips about recycling or about
mending and re-using stuff please let us know. We are very grateful to the Guild
for a generous donation of £50. Thanks also to everyone who keeps putting their
spare change in the collecting box.
The Ragamuffins found a sheltered spot in the church garden to grow some
vegetables. These are nearly ready to harvest.
Drew Nairn is helping us to come up with some good ideas for this area (where
the canoes are stored). We are hoping the DIY Team will help us put in some
steps, a seat and make some bird boxes.
One Sunday some of the younger children planted bedding plants in the flower bed
on the Nicol Street side. We picked up some rubbish and put up a bird feeder. We
also had a bug hunt for the small beasties that live in the garden. (We found a
bumblebee, an earthworm, a ladybird, a millipede and some spiders).

Bob the Bible – the Young
Church mascot – is needing somewhere warm to stay. He normally lives
in the church. But it’s getting too cold. |

The Young Church Project for 2010 is: Christian Aid.
Four of the children and
several parents and leaders took part in the sponsored walk over the Forth Road
Bridge on 24th April. We joined Mrs Hendrie and other members of the church who
always take part in the walk.
We hope that some of the children and leaders will be able to help at the coffee
morning at the church on Saturday 15th May. Each year the Guild hold a coffee
morning to raise money for Christian Aid.
Later in the year Grace and Marc are going to be telling us about the work
Christian Aid do with the Quilombola People on the Amazon River in Brazil.
For more information see

Our fundraising has got off to a good start thanks to all the people who have
been saving up their loose change. We are especially grateful to the Guild for a
generous donation of £50.
The total raised so far at 9th May is

This term so far, Jan. - Feb. 2010
We are halfway through
the term. So far we have looked at the baptism of Jesus; the wedding at Cana;
Jesus reading in the synagogue at Nazareth (and nearly getting beaten up); Jesus
calling Peter, James and John to be fishers of men; and the transfiguration.
Catriona and Marc have come up with some lively and thought provoking children’s
addresses.
Elaine’s group have made doves with feathery tails, brightly coloured fish and
other clever craftwork to remind them of the bible stories.
For the story of the wedding at Cana the 5-8 year old group had a race between
boys and girls. They had to carry water to the ‘stone jars’ at the other end of
the hall. The girls won. (The boys were quicker. But managed to spill most of
the water on themselves and the floor).
Marion and volunteers from the elders have been leading the group for 8-10 year
olds. The Spirit of the Seasons lessons for this age group often involve finding
answers in the bible to the tricky questions for that week. So it is always an
interesting group to lead. The children got a nice surprise when Anne brought a
guide dog she is looking after.
On 21st February we started Lent with a story about Jesus facing temptation in
the wilderness. Helen is getting us ready for the Easter Play on Palm Sunday.
Mrs Robertson came through to help the children practice the songs in the play.
Susan has helped the Ragamuffins group to write a short service. The group are
working on a short video to mark the end of our project about Trust in Fife. It
is a charity that helps homeless people in Kirkcaldy.
Our project for 2010 is Christian Aid. One way we can help is by taking part in
the sponsored walk across the Forth Road Bridge on 24th April 2010. Grace and
Marc are doing some research into the work Christian Aid are doing around the
world.
The other things we are looking forward to are the Young Church Picnic on
Inchcolm in June and the Prize-giving Service on 27th June.
There are some of the pictures of the Wedding at Cana on the
Young Church Gallery.

Project Update 25
October 2009
The Harvest Sale raised more than £170. That brings the total so far to £500.
We are grateful to Trust in Fife for letting us borrow their display for the
last month. It explains the different ways they help homeless folk.
This November we are asking for donations for the Cairn Centre charity shop.
We’ll be delighted to take any unwanted clothes, toys, books, or pots and pans
you might have at home. Just bring them to church on any Sunday in November.

We Raised £2,000!!!

COLLECTION AT
FARMERS MARKET, 31 May
The sun shone. Folk from the church gave us lovely home baking to sell. People came over to admire Susan and James motorbikes. We raised £177.42 on the day. We are grateful to Tom Mitchell from Puddledub for sponsoring the cost of the stall.
The following quotes are
taken from the Riders website: ‘Most importantly,’ said James from Linktown
church, ‘we were positioned two stalls down from the chap that sold ice cream.
Rhubarb and ginger flavour was a particular favourite!’
James said: ‘The money we raised at the weekend will go towards the second part
of our Riders fundraiser, which we have named the “Spanner Fund” because we know
how important it is to keep vehicles maintained.'

8 June 08 - MONEY
FOR MOTORBIKE SENT TO RIDERS
We were able to tell the
congregation that a cheque for £1450 had been sent to Riders for Health. This
will pay for a motorbike. Any funds we raise between June and the end of the
year will go into the ‘Spanner Fund’. This will support Riders’ vital work of
maintaining the health workers vehicles.
We have since received a generous donation of £100, and people are still
collecting their pennies – for which we are really grateful.
27 September 08 – there will be a coffee morning in aid of the project.

James has turned one of his old motorbike helmets into a collecting tin. In October folk brought Scottish food to the Harvest Service to sell in aid of the project. James told us about the work Riders for Health do. Edith sold the harvest produce after the service for us. It made £131.
The children and other folk at the church are collecting pennies to bring to church each week.
